Deputy Information Minister Samuel Odzeto AblakwaGovernment is worried about the seeming upsurge in obscenity and pornography in the media.

As a first step, we wish to draw your attention and call for immediate action to stem the tide.

We have observed with disgust the rise in print publications which carry nude pictures and which are made available on the various newsstands on a daily basis and which are also exposed to minors.

Also of concern, is the unrated music videos which are aired at all times of the day on television stations and which contains scenes which are most unacceptable to a general audience.

Another disturbing trend is the proliferation of radio sex programmes which are most explicit and repulsive.  It is our view that merely airing these programmes at night does not mean there should be no care about the kind of details such programmes churn out.  It is important that the media take cognizance of the modern reality of many portable devices including cell phones which have radio options and so it is not enough to assume that once parents have guaranteed their children are not by the radio, then all is well.  The other problem with this position is the assumption that parents are always with their children.  What about those in boarding schools for example.  It is important that we establish some clear parameters for such programmes and ensure strict enforcement.

We attach herewith some publications which justify our anxiety.

May I take this opportunity to commend you on the efforts you are making to carry out your mandate despite the obvious constrains.  We have no doubt in the capacity of the National Media Commission to help in this matter.

Do accept the assurances of our highest esteem.

Yours sincerely,

Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa
Deputy Minister for Information
