Aqua Vitens Rand Limited, operators for Ghana Water Company Limited, has suspended the spilling of excess water from the Weija Dam indefinitely.
The Communications Manager of AVRL, Stanley Martey, told Citi News the water levels have receded to about 47 feet which is very safe hence the closure of all five spill gates of the dam.
The AVRL begun the spillage exercise a fortnight ago as water flow from its source, the Densu River in the Eastern Region intensified.
Mr. Martey, who has been leading the campaign for residents near the dam to relocate, reiterated the importance of his message.
According to him, the spill gates could be opened again within the year, since more rains are expected.
“It is not as if it has been closed for the rest of the year but there is a possibility that we could open the spill gates again so it’s important that those who live along the waterway after the dam to the estuary around Adakope, evacuate the place” he advised.
Mr. Stanley Martey has also called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), members of Government and chiefs living at Weija, to add their voices to the AVRL’s calls on residents to relocate.
