Newcastle United left-back Jose Enrique has foregone the opportunity to offer assurances to supporters on Tyneside that he will be staying at St James’ Park this summer.

Rumours continue to swirl that the former Villarreal and Spain under-21 defender could be set for a summer move to Liverpool – following the same path trod by £35 million striker Andy Carroll in January – after continuing to stall on a new contract with Alan Pardew’s side.

Enrique has been highly impressive for the Magpies during the current campaign, and Pardew is still hoping to persuade Enrique and midfield duo Joey Barton and Kevin Nolan to extend their deals at the club.

But the left-back, when asked about what lies ahead for him, told the Evening Chronicle: “We will see what happens.

“The most important thing is the team. I know the fans like me a lot, but we will see.”
