Probe Jake over stadium disaster money – Richard Quashigah

The National Propaganda Secretary of the governing NDC, Mr Richard Quashigah is asking anti-corruption agencies in the country to investigate the National Chairman of the NPP over his handling of dionations meant for families of victims of the May 9 stadium disaster.

Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey was the Chief of Staff when the disaster that claimed 126 lives occurred and Mr Quashigah suspects that money donated by individuals and corporate organisations for the benefit of families of the victims was not accounted for.

In a statement issued Monday, Mr Quashigah, said, “The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is also deeply worried that funds raised running into billions of cedis by the then NPP government from corporate institutions and individuals in different denominations ranging from Euros to Cedis intended for assuaging the economic plight of those orphaned by the disaster especially, have not to date been adequately accounted for.”

“It is sad that Mr. Jake Obestebi Lamptey the current NPP Chairman then Chief of Staff and Minister for Presidential Affairs who collected these monies without accounting for them is on a ‘Deception Tour’ with the NPP flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo while the victims who lost their bread winners in the May 9, Stadium Disaster continue in pain,” the statement added.

The NDC Propaganda Secretary said it was about time the NPP Chairman was held to account for the money.

“One wonders with which credibility Mr. Jake Obetsebi Lamptey is out there selling the NPP to Ghanaians when his actions nine years ago may have compelled the spirits of the 126 lives lost in the stadium disaster to be crying for justice and accountability just as the spirit of the late king of Dagban and forty others are crying for justice,” Mr Quashigah intimated.

Monday, May 9 marks the 10th anniversary of the disaster and the “NDC wishes to express its deepest condolence to the bereaved families especially the nucleus families of those who lost their lives.”

Mr Quashigah said while the government was doing its best to provide for the basic needs of the orphans and widows of those who perished in the disaster, agencies such as the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), must investigate Mr. Jake Obetsebi Lamptey to determine how much was realized from the donations towards May 9, 2001 Stadium Disaster and to what use the monies were put.
