Tottenham’s Gareth Bale out for rest of season with ankle ligament injury

Tottenham midfielder Gareth Bale will miss the last two games of the season with an ankle ligament injury.

The Wales international was forced off in agony in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Blackpool after the Seasiders skipper Charlie Adam lunged in on the winger.

It had initially been feared that Bale had broken his ankle but Spurs boss Harry Redknapp was quick to quash those rumours and has suggested instead that the winger has sustained an ankle ligament injury and is unlikely to play again this season.

He told reporters: “It was a bad ankle knock. I wouldn’t think he would play this season, it’ll keep him out now. It’s badly swollen so we’ll just wait and see what the damage is.

“It looks like he has done his ankle ligaments. I don’t see him playing again this season.”

Redknapp admits it is a setback to lose the winger again having only just returned to the side after injury in the last few weeks, and feels the spate of knocks have undermined the youngster’s finish to the season.

He added: “It’s a blow but we have been without Gareth quite a bit recently.

“He has had injuries and he hasn’t really come back from those injuries to the form he was in before. It’s been difficult for him.

“The injuries have knocked him back. He has had a fantastic season. The first three-quarters of the season, he was unplayable.

“Over the last couple of months the injury has taken its toll on him. During that time he hasn’t quite been the same boy and now he has another injury that rules him out again.”
