This, according to the National Chairman of the party, Jake Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey, is because the party has resolved not to grant amnesty to such persons any longer. Addressing winners and losers of the party’s parliamentary primaries in the Ashanti region on Thursday, the national chairman cautioned those persons who have such plans to abandon them for good.
He said the development significantly affected the fortunes of the party in the 2008 polls, hence the decision not to grant amnesty to such persons.
Mr. Obetsebi Lamptey noted that being a parliamentarian is not the only avenue persons in the party can contribute their quota to the success of the party. He said the party will explore viable ways of ensuring that losers in the primaries were given recognizable role to play in the party to ensure victory in 2012.
The national chairman pointed out that victory in the forthcoming elections was more important that one person becoming a parliamentarian on the ticket of the party.
Mr. Obetsebi-Lamptey hinted that intelligence gathered by the party indicates that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), as part of its plans to break the front of the party, will sponsor some losers to contest the 2012 polls as independent candidates.
He noted that the ruling party has targeted the strong holds of the party to ensure that the independent candidates reduce the votes of the party to enable their candidates to sail through.
The national chairman therefore cautioned the party members, particularly the losers to be conscious of such machinations so that they do not become victims.
In the Ashanti region alone, there were two leading members of the party, who contested the election as independent candidates in the Bekwai and Bosome Freho constituencies. Interestingly, these two independent candidates, Joe Osei Wusu and Ofori Kuragu defeated the NPP candidates in the polls, though the constituencies were known to be the strongholds of the party.
Dubbed ‘all hands on deck mission,’ the flagbearer of the NPP for the 2012 polls, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, in company of some national executives, are touring the country to fraternize with both winners and losers of the party’s recently held primaries.
The move is to provide a platform for the flagbearer and the national executives to talk to the winners and losers to ensure that peace and tranquility becomes the order of the day in the party.
