There were dignitaries at both the church service at the Saint Cyprians’ Anglican Church in the morning and a birthday party later held at the Manhyia Palace but none of them received much attention and admiration as Nana Konadu.
Nana Konadu is contesting President Atta Mills for the NDC’s presidential slot for the 2012 polls. The President of the 31st December Women’s Movement, who was accompanied by her youngest daughter, Amina, and close associate of the Rawlingses Herbert Mensah, was the cynosure at both events.
The high point for Nana Konadu was when the Akyempimhene, Oheneba Adusei Poku, announced that Otumfuo had nominated Nana Konadu and his wife Lady Julia to cut his 61st birthday cake.
The thunderous uproar that followed the news nearly shook the entire foundation of the Manhyia Palace Gardens where the big party for the King was taking place. The Asantehene and numerous Asante chiefs surrounded Nana Konadu and Lady Julia as they cut the cake.
Prior to the cutting of the cake, Nana Konadu, who is noted for her dancing prowess, had dazzled the audience by displaying her amazing dancing skills with the Mamponghene, Daasebere Osei Bonsu. There were chants of ‘Nana Konadu’ from the audience throughout the long period that she lasted on the dancing floor. Indeed, the chants did not stop even when she took her seat next to Otumfuo at the high table.
Intermittently, Nana Konadu, who seemed to be enjoying the day, was seen having discussions with Otumfuo but none at the party could hear what the two personalities were discussing.
Earlier at the church service, Nana Konadu, who was resplendently dressed in a white lace dress, also stole the show.
Before entering the church with Amina and Herbert Mensah, the crowd, mostly NDC supporters, were seen showering praises on the former First Lady. When the church service started, the trend was the same as whatever she did attracted a spontaneous uproar from the large congregation.
At the church service too, the high point for Nana Konadu was when Otumfuo Osei Tutu II held her hands and walked side-by-side with her to take their seats. That particular incident happened when Nana Konadu had been prayed for by the priests.
Most of the crowd was heard saying ‘endorsement.’
Among the top personalities that graced the occasion were Alan Kyerematen, Dr. Christiana Amoako-Nuamah and the Ashanti Regional Minister.
