A group of 45 observer groups that participated in the last election in Akwa-Ibom state has given a pass mark to the governorship election held in the state on April 26, 2011.
The group is a coalition of all INEC accredited domestic observer groups for the 2011 elections in the state. The group consisting of over a thousand observation personnel said although there were pockets of irregularities, the elections went well and were free, fair and credible.
Addressing newsmen in Lagos at the week, the chairman of the group Otunba Femi Sanusi said, “the coalition generally observed that all the elections conducted in Akwa-Ibom state were carried out within the ambit of the Electoral Act, though it observed isolated cases of violation of electoral procedures in two local government areas which culminated into cancellation of results in those units.”
He said, such cases were reported and openly announced to the entire state collation centre during the presentation of the results.
Otunba Femi said accreditation exercise started early enough in most polling units with massive turn-out of voters especially in the rural areas.
