Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has expressed his admiration for Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho, but did not go so far as to put his name forward as a potential successor to current boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Scot is 69 years old and there has been a lot of talk surrounding when the manager might call time on a glittering career at Old Trafford – and who his successor might be.
And while Neville admits that that is the biggest problem facing the club at the moment, he has also expressed respect for Mourinho.
“That is the most difficult question for Manchester United – the day when he Ferguson is not manager any more,” Neville told BBC Radio Five Live.
The retired 36-year-old right-back does not think that day is imminent, though.
“He just feels the job is never complete. As a United fan the job at United is never complete – it just goes on forever.”
Neville expressed his view on the Portuguese tactician, adding: “I really like this manager. I think he’s a fantastic manager.
“His team get results and he does what he has to do to get results.
“This guy has won European Cups. He’s a serial winner. He knows how to win games.
“There are many good managers out there and it won’t be just him on the cards to replace Ferguson I am sure.”
