Neville: Hails Mourinho but insists Fergie not ready to retire

Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes Jose Mourinho has all the credentials needed to manage the Old Trafford club.

But the former England defender has stopped short of tipping the Real Madrid coach to take over from Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ferguson, 69, has a one year rolling contract and shows no signs of calling time on his 25-year United reign.

Neville believes finding the right replacement when the Scot does decide to quit is the toughest challenge facing the club.

Winner

He said: “I really like Mourinho. I think he’s a fantastic manager.

“His team get results and he does what he has to do to get results.

“This guy has won European Cups. He’s a serial winner. He knows how to win games.

Gary Neville Quotes of the week

“There are many good managers out there and it won’t just be him on the cards (to replace Ferguson) I’m sure.”

Forever

But the 36-year-old, who recently hung up his boots to concentrate on working as a Sky Sports pundit, reckons Ferguson is not ready to retire yet.

He added: “He just feels the job is never complete. As a United fan the job at United is never complete – it just goes on forever.”
