Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp reveals star midfielder Gareth Bale could miss last three games with ligament damage

Harry Redknapp revealed Tottenham fans may well have to wait until next season to see midfielder Gareth Bale play again after the Welshman suffered suspected ligament damage on Saturday.

The Spurs man was the victim of a late challenge from Blackpool’s Charlie Adam and had to be stretchered off the pitch in the second half, and after the game Redknapp admitted the injury did not look good.

“They think he’s done his ankle ligaments,” he told the BBC.

“It was a poor tackle. I haven’t looked at it again but the boys all say it was a poor tackle.

“We’ll have to wait and see. Will he be fit again for the rest of the season? I don’t know. He certainly won’t be fit to play this week.”

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Huerelho Gomes went from hero to villain again, as he saved Adam’s penalty only to give away a spot kick seconds later for a foul on Gary Taylor-Fletcher, and Redknapp believes the Brazilian reminds him of former England shot stoper David James.

“I worked with David James,” Redknapp recalled. “He was a fantastic goalkeeper.”

“People used to always pick up on his odd mistake but over a season he’d make saves no-one else could dream of making.

“And this guy Gomes is like that. Technically he’s a fantastic goalkeeper. He’s got the ability to make unbelievable saves.

“He’s made a couple mistakes in the last month but over the season he’s done ever so well for us.

“He’s got great ability to make them saves, he’s a great guy, a top-class fella: works hard, trains hard.

“It was a great save from the first one,” he added. “Then we all got to too excited! Everyone was jumping around.

“I thought ‘Hang on here, let’s calm down.’ The ball comes back in and we give another penalty away.”
