In an exclusive interview with Citi News Parliamentary Correspondent Richard Sky, Hon Pelpuo said the NDC founder “stands to gain greater respectability now and in history” if he helps terminate his wife’s moves to challenge President Mills for the NDC ticket for election 2012 on the quiet.
Hon Pelpuo dismissed suggestions that his call on Mr Rawlings to freeze his wife’s ambition may be too late. His comments come just a day after he was named a member of President Mills’ re-election campaign team. The call by the Wa Central MP is the first by a senior NDC legislator since Nana Konadu publicly announced her bid for the NDC ticket on May 4, 2011.
“He (J J Rawlings) should not go that line, I want to address him directly. He is a great man, he is the founder of our party. Please, I want you to take note that this line would not help the future… You are a person of destiny, and what you have done is recognized all over the world. Don’t let us spoil this opportunity of projecting you into history in a grand style” he told our reporter.
Convincing his wife to abandon her bid for the NDC flagbearership is “logical, important, good for Ghana, good for Africa and it is good for himself” Hon Pelpuo said, maintaining that although he will “always want to go with Jerry Rawlings but on this matter please, I want him to recognize the very urgent need to come on the main stream party, to stay on course, and not to give the president a run.”
Hon Pelpuo called pro-Konadu NDC MP, Hon Michael teye Nyaunu, “a maverick” saying the Lower Manya lawmaker is the only MP backing the former first lady’s bid. In his words, about 99% of NDC MPs support President Mills’ re-election bid.
