Birmingham City have confirmed they have been awarded a licence to play in the Europa League next season.

Blues qualified for the competition after their League Cup final win over Arsenal, but doubts had emerged about getting the licence due to question marks over the club’s finances.

However, Birmingham’s acting chairman Peter Pannu has now confirmed the club has received the Uefa licence, allowing the team to participate in European football next season.

“This means we can all focus on what are really exciting times for the club,” Pannu told the club’s official website.

“We have three important Premier League games remaining and we can take this good news into them – starting at Newcastle on Saturday.

“Then we can all look forward to competing in the Europa League alongside the continent’s finest clubs.

“Being granted the licence – which we were always confident of achieving – will put to rest once and for all some of the scare mongering that has surrounded the club.”
