Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp insists that his side will not be abandoned by their star players despite the club destined to miss out on Champions League football next year.

It seemed that Spurs and fourth place rivals Manchester City would fight it out until the end of the season to grab the final spot for Europe’s elite competition, but Redknapp’s squad find themselves seven points behind the Eastlands outfit with three games to play, and in danger of losing out on Europe altogether after being overtaken by Liverpool.

However, the former Portsmouth boss believes that top players would not leave to seek football on the continental stage.

Asked if he feared an exodus, Redknapp told reporters: “No, not at all, no.

“When they came here they weren’t in the Champions League, and when I arrived here they weren’t anywhere near Champions League football – they were all here playing.

“All the players we want to keep here are on good, long contracts, signed new contracts, so there’s not a possibility of us looking to sell our best players, that my opinion.

“It’s up to the owners, but we’re all singing from the same hymn sheet here, we don’t want to be selling our best players – we want to be adding to them if we want Champions League football otherwise we have to expect we won’t see Champions League football again.”

In terms of new signings coming Redknapp’s way, the 64-year-old says that transfers for the summer have yet to be discussed with the club’s chairman Daniel Levy.

Goal.com UK exclusively revealed this week that Spurs are monitoring Real Betis’ Achille Emana and Sevilla’s Diego Perotti.

Redknapp added: “I haven’t discussed it with the chairman yet. I’ll meet with Daniel and we’ll look at it, like everybody does. You have to keep improving if you want to move forward and Champions League is getting tougher and tougher to qualify for.”

The Spurs boss also insisted that many teams will add to their ranks next season, as the likes of Liverpol, Everton, and Aston Villa look to push for European football, and believes a top-four finish will be even more difficult to achieve.

“Next year will be even harder than this year, because Liverpool will be right up there next year,” Redknapp said.

“I wouldn’t write Everton off next year, they’re not far off it this year, so I think they’ll be up there again next year. Aston Villa have got the players to be close next year.

“But certainly you can see Liverpool really improving, Man City, Man United, Arsenal, Chelsea – getting them out of the top four is not easy. So, like everybody, you need to improve if you want to get Champions League football.”
