Jay Spearing has signed a contract extension at Liverpool after enjoying a successful season at the club.

Spearing broke into the Liverpool first team earlier in the year and has gone on to make eight appearances for the club this season.

The midfielder has now agreed to extend his current deal and director of football Damien Comolli has praised the player’s efforts.

“He has worked hard and has done very well,” Comolli told the club’s official website.

“He won his place in the team on merit and has showed in the last games that he can raise his game to what we need.

Comolli insists the new contract is not a reaction to the 22-year-old’s recent impressive form and reveals the club have been looking to agree the deal for some time.

He continued: “To be fair to him, it’s not only what he has done in the last four or five games that triggered the new contract.

“We have been talking for quite a while, independently of what he was doing on the field. But that was confirmation that it was the right thing to do.

“We think he will be part of the future of the club which is why we rewarded him with a new contract.”

Spearing has been an important part of a Liverpool side that has enjoyed a revival since Kenny Dalglish replaced Roy Hodgson, with the Reds now firmly in contention to qualify for European football next season.

Comolli believes Spearing has made a big contribution to the team in the final stages of the season and suggests he has added some much needed quality to the midfield.

“His commitment and aggression on the pitch is fantastic and since he has been playing I think he has added some passing quality which we didn’t see before,” he said.

“He has started to get forward more and the more he plays the more he improves.”
