The Yellow Submarine won the second leg of its semifinal tie 3-2 against the Portuguese champions at home on Thursday night, but having lost the away leg 5-1 last week, went out of the competition 7-4 on aggregate.
Garrido was understandably disappointed with his team’s defeat and was quoted as saying by Goal.com Spain: “They Porto won and they deserved it. I congratulate Porto, who have done a great job in winning this round. We fought with all we could.”
Reflecting on their win at El Madrigal, the coach added: “We played a good game and appeared to be doing well with the fans. Today Thursday I saw the fans believe in the team.
“I appreciate the fans’ support of the team.”
Porto will face fellow Portuguese side Braga in the final in Dublin on May 18. Braga progressed from their semifinal encounter against Benfica on away goals rule after a 2-2 aggregate draw.
