Thomas Rongen’s failure to guide the United States Under-20 team into the World Cup has forced the United States Soccer Federation to relieve him of his duties as head coach.

According to a report from Soccer by Ives, which cited unnamed sources, the 54-year-old’s contract will not be renewed at the end of the year and his tenure as head coach is finished.

Despite Rongen’s disappointing last game, the U20’s 2-1 loss to Guatemala, he deserves credit for recruiting multinational players with American eligibility to join the team. His tenure oversaw the rise of several notable names from Jozy Altidore to most recently Juan Agudelo. In fact, several coaches believe the 18-year-old’s rise started when Rongen decided to name him to the Milk Cup roster last summer, a competition that the team won in Scotland.

Still, the Dutch coach’s inability to secure qualification to the U20 World Cup was seen a major step backwards for USSF. The team has qualified for the premier youth tournament since 1995 and this team in particular was seen as the deepest the country has ever seen.

The report says that Tab Ramos will lead the team in its upcoming trip in France but he hasn’t been named as the interim coach as the USSF looks for Rongen’s replacement.
