A 21-member team led by J.H Owusu Acheampong, a former Majority Leader in Parliament, has been inaugurated to prosecute President John Evans Atta Mills’ campaign to secure the NDC flagbearership at the party’s Sunyani congress scheduled for July 8-10.
The team was unveiled at the Kuku Hill campaign office of President Mills at a mini rally to officially announce the president’s intent to seek a second term.
The unveiling of the campaign team was preceded by the picking of nomination forms by the President at the party’s Headquarters on Thursday May 5.
The President, who has stated that he will emerge winner of the primaries, admitted that it was going to be tedious for him to combine Government business with campaigning but the result would be worth it.
He called for a clean campaign devoid of insults, invectives and personal attacks and wished his opponent Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings well.
Speaking to thousands of party supporters, leading members of the NDC and Ministers of State who had gathered at the launch of his campaign, President Mills noted that the biggest challenge was to retain power in 2012, hence the need to ensure unity after the primaries.
His likeliest opponent, former first lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, picked up nomination forms on Tuesday May 3 and launched her campaign a day later, although she failed to name a campaign team. The two contenders have two months to convince delegates of their suitability to lead the NDC into election 2012.
Members of the 21-member campaign team are Mr Isaac Nii Gyamah Vanderpuije (Deputy Campaign Manager), Mr Fred Ohene Kena, Mr. Kwame Peprah, Mr. Kofi Totobi Quakyi, Mr. Ato Ahwoi, Madam Sherry Aryittey, Presidential Aide Nii Lantey Vanderpuije and Madam Cecilia Johnson, a former General Secretary of the 31st December Women’s Movement.
Others are Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, Ms Ama Benyiwa Doe, Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Hon. Cletus Avoka, Mr. Yaw Antwi-Gyamfi, Mr. Mahama Ayariga, and Hon. Rashid Pelpuo.
The rest are Hon. Emmanuel Bedzra, Dr. Asima, Madam Sylvia Osei, Dr. Stephen Opuni, Dr. Omane Boamah, Madam Bertha Ansah-Gyan, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Alhaji Mahama Fuseini.
The Campaign Manager, J.H Acheampong and his team expressed their appreciation to the President for the opportunity to contribute to his re-election effort.
