Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has put aside his side’s rivalry with Manchester United to congratulate Sir Alex Ferguson’s men on reaching their third Champions League final in the last four years.

The Red Devils secured their place at Wembley after beating Schalke 4-1 at Old Trafford on Wednesday to go through 6-1 on aggregate and set up a final with Barcelona.

Mancini told reporters: “I say congratulations to Manchester United.

“It is a final and it is impossible to know what the result will be.

“Barcelona have probably played the best football in the world for many years. But Manchester United are a very strong team, probably one of the best three or four in Europe along with Real Madrid and Chelsea.”

Mancini himself played in a Champions League final in 1992, but ended up on the losing side as Barcelona beat Sampdoria.

“It was a fantastic day,” he said, recalling the events of the final. “We lost the game in extra time but this is football. In a final, anything can happen.”

Mancini has guided City to the final of the FA Cup this season, where it will face Stoke City and attempt to end a silverware drought that has lasted over three decades.
