Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson has been ruled out for the rest of the season after breaking his arm in training on Thursday.

The centre-back has been one of the success stories for the Magpies this season after forming a solid partnership with Fabricio Coloccini, which has been essential to Alan Pardew’s side’s fortunes.

Pardew described the incident as a “freak accident,” and Williamson is expected to have surgery on his arm later on Thursday, ruling him out of the team’s remaining games against Birmingham City, Chelsea and West Brom.

A club statement confirmed the defender’s absence: “Newcastle United can confirm that defender Mike Williamson broke a bone in his forearm during training this morning.

“He will be having an operation this afternoon and will be out for the rest of the season.”
