Macho men who stormed the assembly premises vented their spleen on innocent assembly members who were suspected to have voted against Atta Bosompim, the president’s nominee.
The well-built men were reported to have been hired to the venue of the polls by a senior member of the Mills administration to ‘discipline’ assembly members who had vowed to reject the newly-appointed DCE.
As at the time of filing this report, four of the assembly members who were beaten up by the macho men were receiving treatment at the Goaso Municipal Hospital. One of them, according to a senior nurse at the hospital, was in coma.
The assaulted assembly members are believed to be sympathizers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Isaac Carter Bonsu, a Presiding Member aspirant of the assembly, told Daily Guide that their lives were spared due to the swift intervention of the police who acted promptly to rescue them from the macho men.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Mr. Bonsu said the macho men pounced on them as soon as they stepped out of the assembly hall after the election had ended in a deadlock.
He said they were knocked and kicked from all directions, causing great pain and injuries to most of them. He however commended the police for acting professionally to save their lives as they intervened quickly and pushed them into a moving vehicle to Goaso to ensure their escape.
Among the assembly members who were assaulted are Abdulai Donkor, Ankoma Boateng, Isaac Carter Bonsu and Ofosuhemaa. The Kukuom District Police Commander, ASP Amemo, who confirmed the report, told Daily Guide that there was some confusion after the election that resulted in the assault of one assembly member.
He said he saw some men at the place but could not confirm whether they were macho men or not. It will be recalled that on April 27, some supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) clashed with the police at Kukuom during the polls to elect a new Presiding Member (PM) for the assembly, which also ended up in a deadlock.
The appointment of the new DCE follows the dismissal of the former DCE, Fleance Danso, by President Mills. However, officials have failed to use diplomacy to lobby some 16 members of the assembly, believed to be well-wishers of the opposition party, to endorse the president’s nominee.
Currently, the assembly is among the few district assemblies in the country which have not yet elected a Presiding Member, after three consecutive polls.
