THE Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Auchi, in Edo State, Dr. Philipa Idogho, Wednesday, disclosed how she curbed the menace of cultism in the institution, saying that the authorities of the institution had in the past three years, spent  millions of naira in sending the student union leaders abroad for workshops on security and leadership.

Mrs Idogho spoke when she took newsmen round some projects her administration executed in the past three years, which included a  storey building housing six  lecture halls, a block of four classrooms for the polytechnic secondary school, renovated four bungalows and a storey building to serve as offices on Campus II, grading and improvement of the old Aviele Road (NNPC Road) leading to Campus II, construction and completion of drainage control system on Campus II, and on-going construction of the Center for Entrepreneurship Development of Auchi Polytechnic,  CEDAP.

She  noted that conducive lecture halls and hostels, for the students would discourage them from cultism.

She added that as a former student of the institution, she knew the problems confronting the polytechnic when she came on board, adding that in order to fight cultism, which was prevalent in the institution  “the first thing I did was to introduce dress code. When we introduced dress code, that brought some discipline.”

Thereafter we started giving orientation to the Student Union leaders after any election. “We give them orientation on leadership and we equally send them abroad to attend workshops and we also sponsor them to Abuja to attend international conferences so that they will know how to lead the students.

We also send them out to attend security workshops like recently we had one in UNIBEN. In 2010, we negotiated with a bank to organize a workshop for all the final year students on life after school due to the high rate of unemployment so that when they leave school, they will know how to comport themselves even when they are yet to get a jobs.
