Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere: We have to forget about this season’s failures if we are to win something next year

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has revealed his team need to banish the pain of this season’s failures in order to win a trophy next year.

The Gunners look set to end another season with no silverware as their trophy drought continues.

The side to ending a six-year wait for silverware this season after reaching the League Cup final but lost to Birmingham City thanks to a mix-up between defender Laurent Koscielny and goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, which allowed Obafemi Martins to score a dramatic last-minute winner.

“We have to win something and we won’t win if we keep thinking about those two weeks,” Wilshere told Four-Four-Two magazine.

“It the League Cup final defeat was devastating, even now the boys still say ‘we could have got a trophy there’.

“There was always the psychological feeling if we won that, it would give us the confidence to win more.”

Arsenal suffered a horrendous period mid-way through the season, in which virtually all their hopes came to an end.

Following the League Cup final loss came an early European exit at the hands of Barcelona, an FA Cup defeat to Manchester United and a flurry of Premier League draws and losses that saw the team fall off the pace in the title race, leading many to call for boss Arsene Wenger to spend this summer to plug gaps in the squad.

Team-mate Johan Djourou, however, insists splashing the cash in the summer transfer window is not necessarily the right way to go about their hunt for silverware.

“Of course you can add players if you wish, but the most important thing is making sure the players you have are progressing well together,” he told Arsenal TV Online.

“I always look at ‘the Invincibles’. People forget sometimes, they say we have not won anything and we need to buy big players, but when the boss went to get Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Freddie Ljungberg people were saying ‘who are they?’

“People were asking questions and look what happened.

“The criticism is not always fair and that is a great example to show it because those guys have become legends.

“Football is not always about buying the biggest players to bring you glory.”
