NEW YORK (AP)—Junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will defend his title for the first time against Ryan Rhodes of England on June 18 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The 20-year-old Alvarez, who has a passionate following in his native Mexico, won the WBC version of the title with a unanimous decision over Matthew Hatton on March 5.
Alvarez (36-0-1, 26 KOs) is a protege of Oscar De La Hoya and is represented by De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions. Rhodes (45-4, 31 KOs) is promoted by former world champion Ricky Hatton’s company.
