Eighteen players and seven officials of the Super Eagles are now in the Abeokuta camp of the home-based Super Eagles who are getting ready for this year’s West African Football Union (WAFU) Cup competition starting in the ancient city tomorrow.
The Super Eagles are the defending champions of the competition after beating Senegal 2-0 in last year’s final at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta. That team was captained by Solomon Okpako. The team also included Ahmed Musa, Gabriel Reuben, Terna Suswam, Gbolahan Salami, goalkeeper Bassey Akpan and Eugene Salami.
This year’s tournament, which will see all the matches played in Abeokuta, will take place from May 5 to 15 and would involve eight West African nations.
NFF officials insist the tournament would serve as a welcome forum for players in the domestic league to prove themselves. Samson Siasia is in charge of the team. According to fixtures released during the week, the Super Eagles take on fellow Eagles of Mali in the opening match of the tournament on Thursday, starting from 4pm. Earlier, last year’s runners-up Teranga Lions of Senegal clash with Gambia’s Darling Scorpions. That first match will kickoff by 2pm.
