President Rupiah Banda has said the media plays a critical role in the nurturing of democracy, promotion of human rights and in the fight against corruption.
The president told journalists in an interview at State House yesterday that there was need for the media to remain responsible in their reporting.
“This is a very important day for us and you the journalists, we can’t have democracy and human rights, we cannot fight corruption without this good profession,” he said.
President Banda said he was happy with the manner in which the Zambian media, both private and public were working.
He, however, said just like in a family, there were some media institutions which had their own agenda.
The president cautioned journalists against getting carried away and engaging themselves in destructive reporting as that could cost the country dearly.
He said the success of the country depended on positive reporting by the media.
Zambia yesterday joined the rest of the world in commemorating the World Press Freedom Day.
