South Warned of Heavy Rains

An alert warning the south of heavy rains and flash floods was announced by the Namibia Meteorological Service this weekend.

For yesterday, the weather bureau’s forecast on its website warned that the south should be “on alert for extreme flash floods. Heavy rains will again set in the south on Wednesday and continue on Thursday, spreading to the central coast”.

In addition, it announced that aside from today, “heavy rains and windy conditions are expected” in the south until Friday.

The flash floods are likely to occur in local rivers and are not expected to impact on the large border rivers, it was reported yesterday.

Professor Kobus Botha, the South African weather expert, confirmed yesterday that heavy rains, which began on Sunday, are likely to persist across the south, and the deep south, on Wednesday and on Thursday. Today, chances of rain in the south are less, but will pick up tremendously tomorrow and the day after.

“There are definitely very good chances for heavy rain in the South,” he said. In addition, he added that the central parts of Namibia could expect isolated showers today, but will remain dry for the rest of the week.

According to Botha, by Friday, the rain “will vanish”.

Botha yesterday noted that possibilities for rains elsewhere in the country, for the central, eastern and northern regions, are less likely, though it could remain cloudy.
