Amelia Franklin Elected Secretary General of OMM

Maputo — The Organisation of Mozambican Women (OMM), which is affiliated to the ruling Frelimo Party, on Monday elected Amelia Franklin as its new Secretary General, with Violeta Langa and Elisa Amisse being elected to the National Secretariat.

Speaking at the close of business, OMM President Maria da Luz Guebuza said that the organisation has assumed with pride the role of mobilising women and the population in general to further the objective of eliminating poverty and reviving socio-economic development, which are the priorities of Frelimo.

Maria da Luz Guebuza said that the delegates would leave the Congress keeping “firmly to our role of promoting the culture of work, which is the fundamental element for the participation of Mozambicans in the creation of wealth”.

The president of the OMM stated that the complexity of the challenge of overcoming poverty required the organisation to forcefully intervene from the grassroots through to the highest level, and to include the Diaspora.

She stated that “we will continue to be an unbeatable force in strengthening our Mozambican identity and consolidating peace and democracy, as well as in the struggle for development and economic growth”.

For Maria da Luz Guebuza, this intervention should be included in OMM’s programme for the next five years.

The Congress was held over the weekend and was attended by over 700 delegates.

The outgoing Secretary General, Paulina Mateus, thanked the delegates for their support during her period in office and pledged to continue to work with the new officers.
