CONACAF to support Sepp Blatter in FIFA presidency election

Bundesliga outfit Schalke has received some positive news in the build-up to its upcoming Champions League semifinal second-leg against Manchester United, with prolific striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar set to make a comeback from injury, Bild reports. The former AC Milan attacker sustained a knee problem in February and was initially expected to be sidelined for two weeks at most, but has now been out of action for close to two months. A return to the fold for Huntelaar now seems to be on the cards on Wednesday, however, as the Germans face a tough task to overturn their 2-0 first-leg defeat

Sepp Blatter’s hopes of being re-elected as FIFA president on June 1 have received a major boost as the current supermo will be backed by the 35 member associations of CONCACAF.

CONCACAF tend to vote as a block and a plan to back Blatter is expected to be approved during a meeting in Miami on Tuesday.

“It is very probable based on everything that has happened. It’s very likely that an official announcement will be made that Blatter will be backed by Concacaf at the elections,” a spokesman was quoted as saying by Insider.

Confederation president Jack Warner and secretary general Chuck Blazer entertained Blatter at the CONCACAF’s gala dinner on Monday evening, while Mohamed Bin Hammam, Blatter’s opponent in the race for the FIFA presidency, was absent.

CONCACAF’s decision to support Blatter is yet another blow for Bin Hammam as the 10 members of South American federation CONMEBOL revealed over the weekend that they too will back Blatter at the presidential elections.
