John Mensah is likely to stay at Sunderland for next season despite not playing the 25 matches needed to trigger a permanent deal for the loanee, says his agent.

Ghana defender, who is on loan at the Black Cats from French side Lyon, has been a key player in the Sunderland squad.

But his previous injury problems led to an agreement where he permanently sign for Sunderland if he played 25 matches.

The back problem ended but a calf injury surfaced which prevented him from the 25 matches for him to get the permanent deal.

But Fabian Piveteau, who represents John Mensah, claims a deal for the Lyon loanee remains a possibility.

“For John, there is a good chance (of signing),” Fabian Piveteau said.

“The situation with him is that if he played 25 games, he would definitely sign for Sunderland but he has only played 18 at the moment.

“He has not played all of the games but this season it has not been the same type of injuries for John.

“At the moment I think the results are the priority, but the coaches will talk with him soon about next season.”

Sunderland have at least £18 million to spend after the sale of Darren Bent to Aston Villa in January.
