Windhoek — Aletta Karikondua Nguvauva, mother of Keharanjo II Nguvauva and wife of the late Chief Munyuku II Nguvauva was appointed new Paramount Chief of the Ovambanderu last Saturday, the Ovambanderu Traditional Authority (OTA) announced.
She was appointed at Otjijarua in Omaheke to succeed her son Keharanjo who committed suicide on April 8. The OTA said in a press statement that they made the decision after a recommendation by the Ovambanderu Supreme Council.
“Queen Aletta Karikondua Nguvauva was unanimously recommended by eminent members of the Nguvauva clan after the latter’s consultation with the relevant patri and matrilineal clans as per Chapter 9 of the Ovambanderu Constitution,” read the statement.
The Ovambanderu community met last weekend in Otjombinde to perform rituals signifying the end of the mourning period for Keharanjo who was recently buried in Opuwo.
Apart from Keharanjo and Rikarera, Aletta has two children with the late Munjuku, a son, Kapukisire (16) and daughter Komozondanda (10). Aletta was born in Otjozondjima, Epukiro on December 7, 1966. She attended Drimiopsis High School in Gobabis.
The OTA would hold a press conference tomorrow to shed light on the process followed and to formally introduce the Queen.
Keharanjo was crowned Paramount Chief of the Ovambanderu community in 2008 to succeed his father, the late Paramount Chief Munyuku II Nguvauva, but the succession was marred by court disputes as another Ovambanderu faction maintained that his brother, Kilus Nguvauva should be heir to the throne.
