Westwood: showcase event
World number one Lee Westwood rates the BMW PGA as the most important event after the four major championships.
Westwood, who has reclaimed the No.1 ranking after winning his last two events in Indonesia and Korea, said: “The BMW PGA Championship is the biggest title that I play for outside of the majors.
“It’s bigger than the World Golf Championships because of what the tournament represents for us as the European Tour. It’s the Tour’s showcase event and obviously I’d love to win.”
Westwood’s best finish in 17 attempts was runner-up to Colin Montgomerie in 2000, the year he returned to the West Course five months later and lifted the World Match Play by beating the Scot at the second extra hole.
This year’s event will have all four current major champions in the field, plus the world’s top three in Westwood, Martin Kaymer and Luke Donald.
