Expansion of Social Services in Barentu Sub-Zone Improving People’s Lifestyle

Barentu — The putting in place of various service-rendering institutions in 13 administrative areas of Barentu sub-zone over the past 20 years are making major contribution in improving the living standard of the people, stated Mr. Ibrahim Mohammed-Ali, head of social services in the sub-zone.

He indicated that potable water supply, education, health and other services have been made available in the sub-zone. Mr. Ibrahim explained that 14 hand-pumps and 3 solar energy-generated water sources have been put in place in the sub-zone, thus easing the previously existing acute shortage of potable water supply. The construction of 23 water reservoirs in the sub-zone are equally playing due role in providing drinking water to livestock resources, he added.

Noting that prior to independence there were only 7 elementary and 1 junior school in the sub-zone, Mr. Ibrahim explained that at present there are 24 schools with special emphasis on the remote areas. As a result, the number of student enrollment in education has increased by 86%, he elaborated.
