Evergreen highlife musician, Alfred Benjamin Crentsil Jnr., known in showbiz circles as A.B Crentsil says there is a growing revolution against hiplife by the youth in Ghana.
According to him the revolution is as a result of vulgar language and unnecessary noise that has become the trademark of hiplife musicians in Ghana today.
Speaking to Adom Entertainment News, A.B stated that the youth are now fed up with hip-life and rap and are showing a high enthusiasm for highlife music.
“Highlife music almost died out especially at the advent of hiplife in the mid-nineties but it has now been revived with more highlife musicians in demand to perform at concerts in the country,” he said.
According to him, hiplife is now losing the tight grip it held on the youth some time back, adding that more young people are now realizing the real value of highlife and are embracing it with passion.
A.B. Crentsil was part of a number of highlife legends including Paapa Yankson and Gyedu Blay Ambolley who performed at the Highlife Festival organized by Adom FM for the Easter celebrations in Kwahu and he said he was really impressed with the turnout.
He said the fact that the majority of the people in the audience at the Eastern Palace restaurant were young people proved that Ghanaian youth have finally accepted highlife and live band music as their own and called on Ghanaians to help promote the brand since that is the more internationally recognized Ghanaian music genre.
Alfred Benjamin Crentsil Jnr. was born to the late Alfred Benjamin Crentsil Snr. and Esi Yaaba at Potsin in the 1940s.
He had his primary and middle school education at Takoradi Methodist Primary and Rev Cleveland Middle School respectively.
A.B worked under his father as an apprentice electrician. His father was then the Works Superintendent of the Technical branch of Ghana Railways at Takoradi.
Whiles in middle school, he was introduced to the guitar by one Mr. Thedoh and combined singing with playing the guitar.
He joined the Strollers Band while still working as an electrician and they performed at many events. A.B Crenstil also played with the El Dorados, Sweet Talks and later with the Ahenfo Band.
Some of his hit songs include Adam and Eve, Moses, Our Father, Juliana, Adwoa, I don’t know Why, Kafo Mpo Dzidzi, Memba Bio, I go pay Tomorrow, Pe Adwuma ye, Aboa oni Dua, Atia.
