WORKS and Supply Minister Gabriel Namulambe has directed the contractors working on the recently commissioned K181 billion landlesscorner-Mumbwa Road to speed up the works to ease movement for the travelling public.
Mr Namulambe said the Government was in a hurry to develop every corner of the country through provision of a good road network which is key to any economic development.
Speaking in an interview yesterday, Mr Namulambe said the Government would be monitoring the progress of the works closely and would want to see quality works to ensure the road is able to stand the test of time.
Mr Namulambe said the road was an important project and was interested in seeing to it that the works are completed within the specified period of time and that unnecessary delays would not be tolerated.
He appealed to motorists to support the works by observing road signs to avoid accidents.
“As Government, we will be seriously monitoring the works going on because we are interested in seeing to it that the work is completed within the specified period and we will not allow unnecessary delays,” he said.
The minister said the upgrading of the road would benefit commercial farmers as well as small-scale farmers who have difficulties in moving their produce to the markets.
The road, which would covers 65 kilometres, had been awarded to Wade Adams Piling at a contract of K80 billion while lot two, which covers the other 50 kilometres, had been awarded to China Henan International at K101 billion.
The contract duration period for lot one is 18 months. Lot two will take 16 months. President Rupiah Banda last year in December commissioned the upgrading of Landless-Mumbwa Road with assurance to Zambians that similar projects would be extended to other parts of Zambia.
During the commissioning President Banda said he is happy that projects that were started by the late president Levy Mwanawasa were being concluded successfully.
He said the commissioning of the Landless Corner-Mumbwa Road would create more than 200 jobs and advised the contractor to consider giving jobs at all levels to Zambians to empower them and that he would ensure the project was completed within a short space of time.
Mr Banda said the project was important as it connects Mumbwa to the Great North Road and currently serves as a main arterial road in the local, national and regional transportation network
