Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt is Goal.com‘s Player of the Month for April.
The Goal.com team put forward their views as to which player put in the best performances during the course of the month, and the Dutchman beat West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie and Norwich City striker Simeon Jackson by two votes.
After starting the month by featuring in the 2-1 loss to West Brom, the 30-year-old managed to score in the very next game against Manchester City, helping his side to a 3-0 victory over Roberto Mancini’s men. And the Netherlands international continued his rich vein of form by scoring in every other game during the month, while creating two assists as well.
Kuyt’s tireless work-rate and his recent form have been a big factor in the club currently occupying fifth place in the Premier League.
The 24-year-old forward scored eight goals during the month, including hat-tricks against Scunthorpe United and Derby County. And the late winner he scored against Derby denied Neil Warnock’s men from clinching direct promotion at the time, whilst keeping his own team in the running for second spot.
Peter Odemwingie (West Brom)
The Nigeria international put in a noteworthy performance against Liverpool, before going on to score four goals in as many games during the rest of the month. He also assisted in the scoring of two goals – against Sunderland – and has played a pivotal part in Roy Hodgson’s men having pulled away from the relegation zone.
Darren Bent (Aston Villa)
The England international has proved to be an invaluable signing for Villa, having scored four goals in as many matches to help his side all but seal their safety – particularly more so during the absence of manager Gerard Houllier, who has been hospitalised due to illness.
Didier Drogba (Chelsea)
The Blues’ experienced forward did not score a plethora of goals this month, but managed to put in performances strong enough to earn an honourable mention. He scored twice in April, but set up four goals during April.
Ryan Giggs (Manchester United)
The Welshman assisted in all three goals that the Red Devils scored against Chelsea earlier in the month, which saw them set up a clash against Schalke. And the 37-year-old hit the net against the German side to become the oldest goal scorer in the Champions League so far.
Robin van Persie (Arsenal)
The Dutchman found the net four times and assisted in scoring two more in six games during the month. His strong form is further exemplified by the fact that the Gunners played Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester United during this period.
Jonathan Walters (Stoke City)
The 27-year-old put in good performances when it mattered for the Potters. The former Ipswich Town man scored to help his side to a draw against Chelsea, and topped it with a double in the FA Cup semi-final win against Bolton Wanderers.
