Kenya: Alfred Kirwa Yego to Launch Daegu Campaign in Doha

FORMER world 800m champion Alfred Kirwa Yego will launch his world championship campaign in Doha Qatar next month. With the Samsung Grand Prix season kicking off on May 6 in Doha, the world race beater said that he will be running his specialty race as early preparations for the Augusts’ world championships in Daegu.

Yego settled to third place in the 1,500m during the Athletics Kenya and National Bank of Kenya meeting in Kisii and he added that he will skip the Mumias meet to prepare for Doha’s.”I ran in Kisii but I was gauging my speed for my specialty race of which I will run in Doha. I will shift to 1, 500m as from next year.” Yego said while training in Eldoret.

The race is billed a mouth-watering one with world 800m record holder and the two-time world 800m indoor champion David Rudisha and Abubaker Kaki respectively entering the race.”I am in a good shape to compete with my compatriots and improve on my time.” Yego said.

Yego has a Personal Best of 1.42.67 in the 800m he posted at the IAAF Grand Prix in Rieti-Italy after finishing second to David Rudisha who set an African record of 1.42.01 which had been held for 25 years by Sammy Koskei.

The 24-year-old said his entering the IAAF Diamond league was part of a hope of claiming a podium finish in South Korea.”Though everybody is my rival including Kenyans, we want Kenyans to produce a clean sweep during the world championships and that’s why we have started shaping up for it,” he said.
