We cannot demand an official to be right every time – Chelsea’s Petr Cech calls for technology in football

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has added his voice to those who call for technology to be introduced into football, maintaining officials are bound to make mistakes in games.

The debate for video replays to be brought into football sparked after Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Tottenham on Saturday. Frank Lampard’s effort, which was fumbled by Heurelho Gomes, only partially went over the line, a goal, however, was awarded.

Cech believes it is now time for technology to be introduced, as the goalkeeper fails to understand why Uefa added two extra officials in European matches.

“It is incomprehensible to me, really. Every year there is a number of such controversial situations and as a result of that they added two officials for the Champions League fixtures,” the Czech keeper said according to Sky Sports.

“Still, it has led to no solution. There are simply things which a human eye cannot see.

“For the past five years I have been asking myself ‘Why is bringing video technology into football still being delayed?’

“Why in such important games isn’t there a chance for the fourth official to see the replay and in five seconds have all controversy sorted out? Then you wouldn’t see protests going on for another 10 minutes.”

The Blues stopper believes crucial decisions should not always be left for the human eye and has called for players and managers to ease of referees.

“We cannot demand an official to be right in every single case.

“Yes, on television everyone saw that the ball after Lampard’s shot did not cross the goal-line fully, that is why the goal should not have been allowed.

“But the linesman at that moment was keeping an eye on the offside line, he was standing in a different place and from his viewing angle it did look in.

“Even our second goal was controversial because there may have been an offside. In this situation it was not so clear, though. The referee couldn’t see it precisely at such speed. It is not in the human possibilities (to judge it properly).

“That is why I wouldn’t blame referees. Those who want to criticise them, go ahead, but people should look to criticise somewhere else.

“During every season you see such things happen several times. We were lucky this time, I admit that, but earlier in the season there had been decisions made against us, so we can do nothing about it.”
