Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish: We were much better organised in 1-1 Wolves draw than at Liverpool

Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish remains confident that his side has what it takes to win as many points as possible to keep clear of the drop zone with four games to go following a 1-1 draw against Wolves.

Blues were down to 10-men for over an hour after Gardner was sent off in the first half but none of the teams found the edge to claim all three points.

Speaking after the game, McLeish said: “We want to keep going to get as many points as we can.

“After That type of performance in which we were much better organised than at Anfield last week we are confident we can get some more points.”

Birmingham were sunk 5-0 after a scintillating performance by Liverpool last week during which Maxi Rodriguez scored a hat-trick and McLeish was happy to have avoided repeating that performance.

“We were a bit open at Anfield to be honest and I have to take a little bit of the blame for that as well,” McLeish added.

“We made individual errors then that just aren’t like us but that can happen in the course of a season.

“You can have one or two games during a season where the quality of the opposition will punish you 100 per cent.”

Winger David Bentley, on-loan from Tottenham since January, left the training ground because he was not selected to feature in Blues’ starting XI on Sunday.

“He won’t be the first one and I think it happens at every club. It’s not something I’ll discuss and I’ll sleep on it,” McLeish said.

“I understand the players’ disappointment.

“The others guy that have left before came into training the next day. They don’t stay away forever.

“David was obviously disappointed to be left out but I’m sure we’ll see him tomorrow.”
