Former England striker Gary Lineker believes that winning the Premier League this season would be the pinnacle of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson‘s career.

The Red Devils’ boss was appointed to his current position in 1986, and promptly identified his objective as knocking then all-conquering Liverpool off their perch.

Eleven Premier League titles later, the Scot is on the brink of guiding United ahead of the Merseysiders in terms of the number of domestic championships – Liverpool and United are currently tied on 18 titles each.

Now Lineker believes that the 19th title would be Sir Alex’s best moment as a manager to date.

“He has been brilliant, bringing the best out of a team which is not as strong as others he has had,” the BBC TV ‘Match of the Day’ presenter wrote in The News of the World.

“I stand by what I said right at the start of the season: Winning the title will be his greatest achievement.”

Lineker, whose 48 goals in 80 appearances for England make him the nation’s all-time second top scorer – behind only United legend Sir Bobby Charlton – believes that for Ferguson to realise his dream by overtaking Liverpool in terms of titles won would be the perfect way for the Scot  to retire. But he does not expect that to happen.

Lineker said: “It would be a wonderful way for him to finish. But I don’t think he has any desire to retire yet.

“He seems to be enjoying it more. If he wants to carry on, he should do because he has proved that he is very much up to the job.”
