Embarrassed by Arsenal’s trophy drought, Bacary Sagna would understand if Cesc Fabregas left the club in search of silverware

Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna feels embarrassed by the club’s trophy drought, and admits that he will not be surprised if Cesc Fabregas chooses to leave the Gunners in favour of winning trophies elsewhere.

The Arsenal captain and midfielder has long been heavily linked with a return to Barcelona, and Sagna told The News of the World: “I’ll understand if Cesc leaves.

“He has been here at Arsenal for a long time and he wants to win trophies.

“As professionals, we want to be successful and want to win cups and titles, but we haven’t won a thing for six years.

Fabregas was in the squad when the Gunners won the FA Cup in 2005 in a penalty shoot-out against Manchester United. That was the last time the club lifted silverware.

Since then, they have been unable to add to their list of honours, with criticism increasingly being levelled against manager Arsene Wenger and his reluctance to spend big in the transfer market.

However, Sagna insists that it is not the manager but the players who are to blame for not having won anything of consequence in the past six years.

“It’s embarrassing to be part of a team that hasn’t won a trophy for six years,” Sagna admitted.

“We failed. It’s not the manager’s fault, it’s the players.

“Some people say Arsene Wenger’s not doing well, but he doesn’t play. Everyone was sad at Bolton. We have to be stronger in battle, that’s what we said after the game last Sunday.

“We know we are not a bad team. We have the quality to finish first, but we lost. This is the fault of the players – we have failed.

“We have to say sorry to the fans and to the manager because they have supported us all season.”
