Johannesburg – Domestic workers will have a wage increase with effect from Thursday, the Department of Labour said.
The minimum wage for those working 27 ordinary hours a week in area A would increase from R9.12 to R9.85 an hour and from R246.30 to R265.94 a week, said spokesperson Page Boikanyo.
The minimum wage for those working more than 27 hours would increase from R7.72 to R8.34 an hour, from R347.79 to R375.19 a week, and from R1506.35 to R1162.70 a month, he said.
This was in line with the domestic sectoral determination.
The sectoral determination divides the domestic sector into two geographic areas, area A and B.
Area A includes all urban areas with municipalities such as Bergrivier, Buffalo City, the City of Tshwane, Emalahleni, Richtersveld, Nama Khoi, Johannesburg and others, while area B consists of municipalities not included in Area A.
There would be similar increases in area B, where those working 27 or less ordinary hours a week would now earn a minimum of R8.33 an hour and R974.49 a month, Boikanyo said.
Those working more than 27 ordinary hours a week would earn a minimum of R7.06 an hour, R317.62 a week and R1376.25 a month.
Sectoral determination deals with the protection of workers in vulnerable sectors of work.
