When it comes to the issue of goalline technology in football, Frank Lampard is better placed than most others to comment after experiencing both sides of a linesman’s mistake.

Whereas his shot against Germany in the World Cup was ruled to have not crossed the line when it had done so quite clearly, against Tottenham his shot from a good 30 yards was spilled by goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, who clawed the ball away before it crossed the line, yet the goal was still given.

The decision by assistant referee Mike Cairns, who was a good distance away from the goalline, sparked protest from the Spurs players who were unhappy that the decision had been given when the linesman was not in a position to see it clearly.

It was not the first time that Spurs have been the victims of bad goalline decisions.

In 2005, at Old Trafford, midfielder Pedro Mendes ambitiously tried to lob goalkeeper Rob Carroll from around 50 yards and the ball was dropped a long way over the line, only for linesman Rob Lewis not to give the goal because he was too far away from the action.

The debate on goalline technology has raged for a while and Fifa President Sepp Blatter has promised to look into it, although he remains reluctant to introduce it anytime soon.
