Michael Carrick has expressed excitement at his future at Manchester United with the midfielder admitted that his recent decision to sign a new contract at Old Trafford was a “no-brainer”.

The central midfielder recently signed a new deal and he believes the new young talent, such as Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling, coming through means the club has a bright future ahead.

“The young lads we have got at the moment, there is so much promise for the future, and yet we are still in a position to do something special this season,” he told the Daily Mirror.

“That’s what makes you so excited to be part of it. When the club came to me recently with a long-term contract, signing it was a no-brainer, because I can see what the future holds here – how exciting this team can become.

“I can’t wait, honestly, for what lies ahead, and to be part of it. It excites me. It’s the great thing about this club and the manager – he never sits still.”

United have moved within six games of a Premier League and Champions League double although many have pointed out that they are not as strong a side as the last United team to achieve the feat in 2008, which included Cristiano Ronaldo.

Carrick, though, believes the greatness of this team will be measured in the number of trophies won.

He added: “We haven’t won anything yet, and you know that here greatness is judged on what you win, so it’s difficult to rate this current team at the moment.

“You have to win things and keep winning to be considered a great side – but if you take the European game against Schalke, it was one of our best performances in a long, long time.

“When you take into account the circumstances, the fact it was a semi-final and normally how tight they are, then in that respect it shows you this current Manchester United team has real quality.

“But it’s obvious we have to wait until the end of the season before we can put this team up against previous Manchester United sides.”
