Orlando Pirates are the only obstacle preventing Black Africa from claiming the Namibia Premier League title tomorrow.
However BA know that their traditional foes are more than just any ordinary obstacle to silverware – above all Pirates are considered a monumental barrier to their million-dollar ambitions.
It then should come as no surprise that Pirates are confident of delaying their rivals’ celebrations for another week. Especially since they too harbour slim hopes of snatching the championship from underneath BA’s noses.
Despite being fourth, and currently 10 points adrift of the league leaders, the ‘Sea Robbers’ can theoretically take the title if they win their remaining four matches, provided that the ‘Lively Lions’ lose all theirs.
Black Africa have 38 points, while Pirates are 28.
In between are second-placed Ramblers on 31 points and defending champions African Stars on 29, who not only, crucially, play each other tonight, but will be rooting for Pirates.
“We are not out to spoil BA’s party,” said Pirates technical director Woody Jacobs. “We have our own ambitions. But this will be a massive game. There is a lot at stake.”
His counterpart Brian Isaacs has the same expectations of the match, but wants his charges to avenge the 1-0 first round defeat.
“This is a huge game,” he said. “It’s more than just a derby. Players do not need extra motivation for this match.”
Both teams are expected to be able to field their strongest available sides. However BA will be without the creative influence of injured midfielder Brian Bantam, while the influential Pirates duo of playmaker Riaan Cloete and defender Richard Gariseb are said to be doubtful for the match.
The derby, which kicks off at 8h00, will be preceded by a match involving retired stars of both sides at 15h00.
On Wednesday night, Tigers forward Ananias Gebhardt scored a hat-trick as they beat Civics 3-0 in a mid-table clash.
