It has been discovered that six-year-old Gideon Kodjo Okoh who was in the custody of La Police, after he was rescued from the stampede which led to the death of three people at the La Pleasure Beach in Accra on Easter Monday, was the son of one of the victims of the mishap.

Gideon was taken to the beach by his mother, Lydia Gizoh, 30, who lost her life in the stampede. Little Kodjo could have died too but for the rescue operations organized by the security agents along the line.

A Daily Guide report had indicated that the six-year-old was being housed by the La Police when his parents did not turn up to claim him.

However, after the publication indicating the boy was in the custody of the La Police, family members visited the police station to identify the boy and his deceased mother whose body has been deposited at the La General Hospital’s morgue, awaiting transfer to the Police Hospital for autopsy.

Lydia was among 12 persons who lost their lives at various beaches in Accra and the Central Region. The victims died through a stampede at the La Beach where eyewitnesses have said the situation was caused by a cloudy weather.

Reports said the cloudy weather gave the impression of a downpour, compelling merry-makers to rush towards both the entrance and exit points of the La Beach while security men allegedly closed the gate.

As a result, two siblings, Mary Gimatey, 12, and Benjamin Gimatey, 7, as well as Kodjo’s mum, Lydia Gizoh, died.

Amina Mussa, 22 and Achere Cudjoe, 21, also drowned at the Bola Beach in Accra while five unidentified persons also drowned at the Kokrobite Beach near Accra, with two others at Nyanyano in the Central Region. Meanwhile, the La Police Command has debunked allegations that security men detailed at the beach were to blame for the unfortunate incident.

The police noted it was lack of cooperation on the part of the holiday-makers, who refused to heed the instructions of the police to calm down. Little Kodjo was taken home on Wednesday, April 27, 2011.
