Three nurses and a security man working at the Barnor Hospital, a private hospital in Accra have been arrested to assist with investigations into the disappearance of a new born baby girl from the facility.
The incident occurred during the Easter break and according to the Public Relations Officer of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), Chief Inspector Irene Oppong; the suspects were arrested as they were the ones on duty at the time of the theft.
They have since been granted police enquiry bail by the Dansoman Police.
The baby was reportedly stolen by an elderly woman who pretended to be visiting somebody at the hospital and managed to make her way into the victim’s room while she was sleeping and make away with the baby girl.
Narrating their ordeal to Adom News, Mr Sefa Kissi, the father of the missing baby said his wife, Elizabeth Kissi, was rushed to the hospital on the morning of Saturday April 23, 2011 in labour.
He said after delivering, she was kept in the hospital for another day because the nurses said she was not too strong to leave that same day.
The next day, a relative visited his wife but she was asleep while the baby lay in a cot near her. He said when his wife woke up later, the baby was nowhere to be found and she started screaming for her after which she called him.
Mr Kissi said he together with a nurse, lodged a complaint at the Dansoman Branch of DOVVSU.
He however said he was not happy with the way the hospital authorities are handling the case. “I smell something fishy about the whole incident; I don’t understand how an unidentified woman with a basket can walk straight into the hospital, make her way into a ward and pick up my baby.
“I strongly believe that the workers on duty at that time connived with the woman to carry out that operation and I want the hospital authorities to hold them responsible,” he said.
He said all he wanted now was for the hospital authorities to provide his wife and him with their baby.
Chief Inspector Irene Oppong said all efforts are being made to arrest the culprit.
