Akwasi Owusu aka Barima Nkwan, the Sankore Taxi Branch Local Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and a chop operator, was said to have shot himself in the head in the early hours of Wednesday in his bedroom, after he was seen at his chop bar earlier that morning.
Charles Kofi Mensah, vice chairman of the taxi branch of the motor union, confirmed the incident to Daily Guide at the time the body of the deceased was being conveyed to the Goaso District Hospital Morgue.
He described the bizarre death of his chairman as a big blow to the motor union and said they were yet to unravel the mystery behind it.
Kofi Mensah said he went to the house of the deceased on Tuesday after he failed to turn up for work that day, and observed that he was doing fine.
According to him, the chairman had complained to him about an ailment a few days before his tragic death, adding that he advised the deceased to look for some local medicine to treat it. An eyewitness, who identified himself as Diawuo, told Daily Guide that he saw a daughter of the deceased around 8:30am wailing from the house towards their chop bar, and upon an enquiry, she broke the news to the public.
He said when they went with the police to the room, they found Bariman Nkwan dead in a pool of blood, with a gun lying on him.
