…As court jails housewives for fighting in public

An Abuja Magistrate Court sitting at Karu yesterday sentenced two housewives, Julian Nneze and Augustina Onyia to various prison terms ranging from three to six months respectively for engaging in a public fight.

The accused persons were convicted for public disturbance, an offence contrary to Section 113 of the Penal Code.

Police prosecutor, Francis Udofia, informed the court that on April 25, the accused persons who are neighbours in the same compound had a little disagreement, which later resulted into a fight between them, adding that they confessed to the crime during police investigations.

When the charge was read to the accused persons, they pleaded guilty and begged for leniency, while the prosecutor asked the court to try them summarily.

Magistrate Chinyere Nwacheonwu sentenced Julian Nneze to three months imprisonment or to pay N4,000 as fine, while the second accused person bagged six months imprisonment or to pay N8,000 fine.

She also ordered the two convicts to enter into a bond that they will live together in peace and desist from fighting.
