The Enquirer newspaper reported in today’s edition that Nana Konadu’s campaign team, comprising Hon Teye Nyaunu, and Kofi Adams, special aide to the Rawlings’ to the Western Region had been met with the red card, as they were told in the face that they (the delegates) would never support Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings.
The paper cited the Regional Youth Organiser, Kwabena Mintah Akando, who it said had told the enquirer that Mrs Rawlings’ team had had a very bad encounter with the party executives in the constituencies.
Even though he conceded that they had been in the Western Region, Hon Teye Nyaunu in an interview with Xfm 95.1, rather stated that their encounter with the party’s delegates was fruitful, adding that the Enquirer’s report was far from the truth.
Not willing to say their message to the delegates because he says the message is directly targeted at the delegates, Hon Nyaunu said about 80 per cent of the delegates they met in the Western Region had received their message with enthusiasm, going further to pledge support for Mrs Rawlings.
He described the enquirer’s report as “media mercenarism”, adding that reports as these fail to give a true reflection on what is on the ground to the President.
“This is what I would call media mercenarism; people getting money to print what is not true. And this is what we might be careful about. But I tell u Western Region went successfully, and we were very happy. We met all the constituency executives that we needed to meet, they have told us the problems confronting them- the break in communication, some not knowing where the party is going etc. Actually they were very enthusiastic for a new leader that will inject some hope into their situation now.”
“So for any paper to report that we were given the red card, in fact, they are not telling His Excellency, the President the truth about the objective situation on the ground. When we went to the Western Region, they had informed the constituency delegates not to meet us but they defied this instruction, met us and pledged their full support for Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, going to the extent of receiving her t-shirts. Some wore it in our presence n started jubilating. In situations like these, I just wonder how, anybody would tell me that they gave us red card. I would not say that we had all of them, but if anybody would ask me, I’ll say that we had got about 80% and that is quite significant”.
Hon Nyaunu reiterated Mrs Rawlings competence Nana, further adding she coming from the Ashanti Region has the possibility of splitting the votes in the Ashanti region, the stronghold of the opposition New Patriotic Party.
He however cautioned members of the two sides to be decorous in their campaign as the NDC’s biggest fight would be against the NPP in 2012.
“I have been telling them, let us conduct this campaign with much decorum because what we are doing is just an internal affair, and it would end by July. And so we should build up bridges and get ready for the real battle that would come in next year. So for me, I think there must be no need trying to insult the party, there must be no need trying to insult the sensibility of the public and the party activist at large, and there must be no need trying to discredit anybody. But let’s take the things we know and then go ahead with that.
